Swimming or gathering in the Niles Creek area is both illegal and unsafe
Swimming or Gathering in the Niles Creek Area is Illegal and Unsafe!
Planning a Memorial Day picnic this weekend? If your plans include a day at Niles Creek, think again! Swimming or gathering in the Niles Creek area is both illegal and unsafe, and officers will be on patrol in the area this weekend, keeping an eye out for trespassers.
The Niles Creek and surrounding lands are off limits and trespassing into the creek area can be punishable by arrest per California Penal Code 602(O)(1). The Fremont Police Department is working in conjunction with the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, Alameda County, and Caltrans, to enforce trespassing laws in the Niles Creek and surrounding lands. Violators will be cited and/or arrested. Additionally, vehicles found to be illegally parked will be cited and/or towed.
We understand the desire to cool off during hot weather, but the Niles Creek has many hidden dangers, and people have lost their lives while swimming in this area. Please use an alternate location to have your outdoor gatherings or to cool off in the water. Public options are listed below:
Quarry Lakes Regional Recreation Area | East Bay Regional Park District (2100 Isherwood Way).
Shadow Cliffs Regional Recreation Area | East Bay Regional Park District (2500 Stanley Blvd., Pleasanton).
Contact the *Fremont Police Department <FremontPolice@fremont.gov>* for additional information: (510) 790-6800.

2026 Point-in-Time Homeless Count Results
The *2026 Alameda County Point-in-Time Homeless Count [ https://health.alamedacountyca.gov/data-and-reports/point-in-time-count/ ]* identified 852 unhoused individuals in Fremont, a modest increase from 807 in 2024, while remaining below 2022 levels of 1,026.
The City continues to invest in key programs outlined in *Fremont’s Homelessness Response Plan [ https://city.fremont.gov/hrp ]*, including the *Housing Navigation Center [ http://city.fremont.gov/hnc ]*, *Winter Relief Program [ http://city.fremont.gov/winterrelief ]*, *Keep* *Fremont Housed Program* [ http://city.fremont.gov/keepfremonthoused ], local shelters, and the *Mobile Evaluation Team, [ https://www.fremontpolice.gov/about-us/patrol-division/mobile-evaluation-team-met ]* all helping maintain stability despite ongoing budget challenges.
Countywide, Alameda County saw an 18% decrease in unsheltered homelessness and a 13% overall reduction, reflecting the importance of regional collaboration across Fremont, Newark, and Union City.
Looking ahead, continued regional investment and projects like *Natalie’s Place [ https://www.nataliesplace.org/ ]* interim housing program will be critical to expanding shelter, healthcare, and support services throughout the Tri-Cities region.
