Join us in the Library Program Room for 1988's "Crossing Delancey" (dir. Joan Micklin Silver).

 

This "wonderfully affectionate spin on the romantic comedy infuses the genre with a fresh, personal perspective, following an unmarried Jewish woman’s search for fulfillment in New York City. Happily independent bookstore manager Izzy (Amy Irving) isn’t looking for love, but she’s forced to reevaluate her desires when she catches the eye of two very different men: a self-centered novelist (Jeroen Krabbé) and the mild-mannered Lower East Side pickle seller (Peter Riegert) with whom her old-fashioned bubbie (Reizl Bozyk) sets her up. A love letter to 1980s Manhattan shot in beautifully burnished, autumnal tones, "Crossing Delancey" gracefully captures the magic of a city where disparate cultures, generations, and traditions both clash and connect."

 

This movie is rated PG by the MPAA. The screening will take place in the Program Room. Registration is not required.

IN-PERSON: Bike Safety Information and Repair Workshop

*Saturday, May 10, 10:30 to 12:30 p.m.*

Is your bike in need of a repair or tune-up? Not sure how to tell if your bike is safe to ride? Bring your bike to the Library Plaza!

 

Volunteers from Bike Sunnyvale (the local chapter of the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition) will be onsite to teach the ABC Quick Check, share safety tips, give out bicycle goodies and answer other bike-related questions.

 

Professional bike mechanic Ryan Murphy will be available for advice and help with issues like changing a tire or adjusting gears or brakes. Assistance from Ryan will be first come, first served.

 

Note: Sunnyvale Public Library and Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition do not have spare bicycle parts for replacements.

 

Registration is not required, however it is first come, first served.

IN-PERSON: Material Cinema Workshop

*Saturday, May 10, 1 to 4 p.m.*

Learn how to repurpose castaway mid-century 16mm film through scratching, painting, puncturing, bleaching, and more with filmmaker and "Shapeshifters Cinema" co-director Ellie Vanderlip. Participants will review various “destructive” methods and examples and then jump into experimenting themselves, with each student creating their own sample loop of techniques to take home. Film and art materials will be provided. This workshop is crafted for both those who are new to these processes and those who are interested in deepening their knowledge.

 

This workshop is for adults only. It will take place in the Library Program Room.
