City Council Opts Not to Move Forward with Local Ballot Measures

During July, the Fremont City Council decided not to move forward with two proposed ballot measures for the November 3, 2026, General Election.

At the City Council Meeting on July 21, the City Council decided not to move forward with placing a ½ cent sales tax measure on the November 3 ballot. During the meeting, staff presented findings and shared recent polling data, which summarized an exploratory initiative undertaken at the Council’s direction to identify potential ways to increase local funding. Although an initial viability survey conducted in 2025 showed that roughly 60 percent of voters acknowledged the City's need for additional funding, a subsequent survey indicated that support had softened. The most recent survey indicated the Fremont community is concerned about gas prices and bread and butter issues with 81% citing these economic realities as concerns.

The following week, during a Special City Council Meeting on July 28, the City Council decided not to advance a potential City Charter measure for the November ballot. This meeting marked the third and final discussion regarding the proposal. After deliberation and opting not to move forward with a local measure, the Council instructed staff to return to a future meeting with the elements of the Charter proposal that could be implemented administratively, for consideration.
