City of Fremont Hosting Informational Meeting for Upcoming 2025 Building Code Adoption

Every three years, the State readopts model construction codes to reflect industry changes, technology advances, and legislative requirements. The model codes include building, residential, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, energy, historical, fire, existing building, and green building codes (known as the California Building Standards Code). Earlier this year, the State released the 2025 California Building Standards Code [ https://www.dgs.ca.gov/BSC/Codes ] (model codes), which will become effective on January 1, 2026. All construction and development projects submitted to the City on or after this date will be required to comply with the new codes.

As with prior code update cycles, the City will propose to retain local codes/ordinances for adoption that differ from the State code to address local climatic and geographic conditions. No new local codes/ordinances are proposed as part of this update. On Wednesday, October 8, the City will host an informational meeting about the existing local code modifications. This meeting will also provide an overview of State fire code updates that were adopted by the Fremont City Council on September 16, 2025. Anyone interested in understanding changes made to the model codes by the State that will be applicable to all construction and development projects in Fremont should attend this informational meeting.
