Fremont Cares: Finding Permanent Housing for a Deserving Local Veteran

For over a decade, Loren's worn-down blue minivan was his only shelter. The simple act of accessing a washroom was a daily problem, and the walk to the nearest grocery store was a painful reminder of his physical limitations. 
 
This constant struggle took a toll on his spirit, and the minivan – which was once a mobility tool for him – had devolved into a financial burden, becoming completely inoperable and a target for danger and vandalism.
 
However, those years of struggle didn’t erase Loren's long-standing connection with Fremont, the place that he called home for almost 58 years. 
 
He was a high school athlete, excelling in track and field, and as a teenager, he found joy in exploring many countries in Europe with his family. Loren went on to serve our country proudly as a sonar operator in the Navy, tracking and locating hundreds of submarines during his time in service. As a veteran, Loren entered his elder years battling the harsh realities of homelessness. 
 
He nearly lost hope that he would never have a place to call his own until Loren connected with the City of Fremont's Street Outreach Team, and things began to change. 
 
For over a year, they provided consistent support, building trust and addressing some of his immediate needs. Initially wary, Loren’s reservations diminished as he experienced the team’s steadfast care and dedication. 
 
They connected Loren to other vital resources, including a case worker from the Human Services Department’s Aging and Family Services [ https://www.fremont.gov/government/departments/human-services/aging-and-family-services ] division and the Department of Veteran Affairs’ (VA) Street Outreach team. Because of his veteran status and with the help of the VA team, Loren was deemed eligible for permanent housing. 
 
While waiting for his new apartment to be set up, Fremont’s Outreach team provided Loren with temporary shelter for a few weeks until everything was set.
 
Now, with lifted spirits and security in his new home, Loren can focus on his health and well-being. While challenges remain, he now has a foundation to build upon, and he is grateful for the vital services that help him reconnect with the world.
 
Loren's story underscores the importance of seizing every opportunity for connection and support and showcases how the Fremont Street Outreach team can be a crucial step toward stability for those experiencing unsheltered homelessness.
