We hope you are enjoying your summer. Saturday is the 250th anniversary of the United States of America. All Sunnyvale City offices and facilities, including the Library, will be closed Friday, July 3 and Saturday, July 4. However, you'll find many of our City staff at the 4th of July Celebration in Downtown Sunnyvale. Remember: Fireworks are illegal in Sunnyvale. Protect yourself, your neighborhood pets and the environment by leaving the pyrotechnics to the professionals.

Visit the Library lobby to see this year's Summer Reading-themed art installation by Winnie Lam. This excavation site reveals an underground society of dinosaurs at their favorite community hub—their local library! You can see dinosaurs reading and browsing books, lining up for an author signing, attending a cooking demo, watching a movie and enjoying other library activities.

 

Winnie Lam is a Sunnyvale artist and a member of the Board of Library Trustees. This is her fourth time creating Summer Reading art installations for the Library.

 

This year's Summer Reading theme is "Unearth a Story". Readers of all ages can read to earn prizes. Sign up on Beanstack [ https://sunnyvale.beanstack.com/reader365 ] to join the challenge. Summer Reading runs June 1 to August 31.

On Saturdays, Friends members enter an hour early at 9 a.m. Membership is $10 for individuals per year, or $200 for a lifetime membership. Membership fees are tax-deductible.

 

Sunday is the $5 Bag Sale. Buy a bag for $5 and fill it with what fits.

Silent Book Clubs are catching on around the world as a way to meet other book lovers in your area and read together in quiet camaraderie. Bring a book of your choice, or choose one from the Library's shelves. After an hour of silent reading together, you'll have time to socialize with your neighbors about what you're reading or anything else. Adults only. Registration is not required.

Celebrate local art with the Sunnyvale Art Club Juried Show! Admire original artwork by local artists and vote on your favorite piece for the Viewer's Choice Award. Come to the Opening Reception to meet the artists and enjoy light refreshments. Registration is not required.

Learn the basics of programming through this fun introductory workshop! Students will use block code to explore key coding concepts which are applicable in the real world while to building their very own video game.

 

This program is hosted by the FHS Hack Club, a high school coding club based out of Fremont High School in Sunnyvale. FHS Hack Club believe that computer science education should be available to all, and work to encourage young people to discover the joy of code.

 

This program is for grades 4 to 8. Participants should bring a laptop if possible. Registration is recommended but not required. Register to request a Library Chromebook for use during the program.

Volunteer at the Library





Want to make an impact at the Library? Teens can apply to join the Teen Advisory Board (TAB). Plan programs, improve teen services and learn new skills. TAB meets the first Wednesday of each month from 4:30 to 6 p.m. throughout the school year. The Library is currently recruiting tutors for our adult literacy program Level Up Literacy [ https://www.library.sunnyvale.ca.gov/services/other-services/adult-literacy ]. Work one-on-one with a learner on English reading and writing skills. You and your paired learner will decide on a schedule that works for you both, whether in person or online.

 

Interested in working the bimonthly book sales? Volunteer through the Friends of the Sunnyvale Public Library [ https://fotsvl.org/volunteer-opportunities/ ]. Note: The Friends are an independent organization that supports the Library; volunteers are not managed by the Library or the City of Sunnyvale.

Do you want to make a big difference in Sunnyvale by helping to prevent street flooding and keep pollution from entering the San Francisco Bay? Then adopt a storm drain near you today! The City of Sunnyvale's Environmental Services Department is excited to introduce new a community initiative to help keep local waterways clean and streets flood-free.

 

Storm drains flow straight to local waterways, so keeping them clear of leaves and trash makes a big difference. Adopt a storm drain and help keep your neighborhood safe and clean all year. The City provides the cleanup tools and safety vests, and you name your storm drain and keep it clean.
