More Old News: Expanded Historical Newspaper Digital Collection

Scan of the masthead for the Mountain View Weekly Register, Volume 1, Issue 1, dated Saturday, April 7, 1888.

Mountain View Public Library’s digital collection of historical local newspapers has long been one of the best resources for learning about Mountain View history. Recently, this resource has gotten even better as the Library has expanded our digital offerings both backward and forward in time.

The expanded resources include issues of the "Mountain View Weekly Register" going back to its first issue in 1888 and continuing for parts of 1889, 1891, and 1892. These newspapers were generously donated by a private collector in 2024 and are likely unique to the Library’s collection. Their digitization brings them within reach of a larger community than ever before and unlocks new insight into 19th century Mountain View.

The recent expansion brings our digital collection closer to the present as well. Included in the expansion are issues of "The View", a monthly city-published newsletter, for 1977-1984. These papers illuminate Mountain View’s reckoning with the challenges of urban life, including downtown revitalization, the fostering of community, and broadening economic opportunity.

Finally, the expanded digital collection now includes the first several years of the "Mountain View Voice" (originally titled "The Voice of Mountain View"). Established in 1992, the "Voice" was initially a monthly publication and continued as such until mid-1995. These papers track Mountain View’s development into a hub for culture and entertainment and paint a rich picture of the city on the cusp of the Internet age.

The digital newspaper collection is available exclusively inside the Library, but you can still get your fix of Mountain View history from home with our collections on California Revealed [ https://californiarevealed.org/partner/mountain-view-public-library ] and Internet Archive [ https://archive.org/details/mountainviewlibrary ]. We look forward to bringing you even more digital resources in the future.
