Summer Reading is now underway! Readers of all ages can read to earn prizes. This year's theme is "Unearth a Story". What will you unearth at the Library? Unearth a Story
Sign up now for Summer Reading

Grab a book. Read for fun. Challenge yourself. Our annual Summer Reading program is underway! Our theme this year is "Unearth a Story," so visit the Library all summer long for programs related to dinosaurs, history and unearthing your own story. Log books you finish between now and August 31 to win prizes for children, teens and adults.


* Children and teens receive a free paperback book after signing up. To enter the grand prize drawings, children must read and log at least 5 books or 300 minutes, and teens must read 3 books or 180 minutes. Keep reading for more entries. Prize drawing tickets may be claimed throughout the summer at the Children's Information Desk.
* Adults set their own goals this year! Read and log at least 1 book to receive a prize drawing ticket and $5 gift certificate for the Friends of the Library bookstore or book sales. Then keep reading to reach your own personal goal. Prize drawing tickets and gift certificates available in August at the Information Desk.

United States Semiquincentennial





Fourth of July America's 250th Anniversary

July 4 of this year will be 250 years since the Declaration of Independence marked the founding of the United States of America. It's called a "semiquincentennial"—"centennial" for hundred, "quin" for five hundred, and "semi" for half of that five hundred. Enjoy this opportunity to use a fun word that may never be relevant to you again!

 

In celebration of the semiquincentennial, we are streaming an all-day TED Talk marathon. Our staff will also be downtown helping out with the City's July 4th Celebration!

Waacking is a street dance created by a multicultural group of gay men in underground clubs during the 1970s. The style is characterized by rapid arm rolls, striking motions, dramatic poses and storytelling elements. In this beginner-friendly workshop taught by Alice Hur, learn the basics of waacking. Explore a cave at the Library! CaveSim builds interactive caves that teach explorers about conservation and science. Crawl and climb through the simulation to learn about caves and test your explorer skills. As you maneuver your way through the 150 feet of artificial cave passages, you'll learn about responsible caving while trying to preserve delicate cave formations. Help count pollinators for the Pollinator Week BioBlitz. Pollinator Week is an annual event where participants collect data on the distribution of pollinators across the US, Canada and Mexico. Bring your own phone or internet-enabled tablet with the iNaturalist app installed. We will meet on the Library Plaza and then walk over to the Charles Street Garden. Registration is not required.
