One of the City of Mountain View’s goals is to create opportunities for more housing options. An update to the R3 Zoning District is a key part of that effort. The City is taking comments on draft areas within R3 Zones where new housing could be built.

Construction Activities at
Shoreline Park Entrance

Google map image of Shoreline Park Entrance Work Area

The City of Mountain View maintains and operates the closed Shoreline Landfill, which underlies Shoreline at Mountain View regional park. A key component of the landfill's infrastructure is the Gas Collection and Control System, which consists of vertical wells connected to a buried piping network. The system prevents gas migration, controls odors and minimizes emissions.

To improve system integrity, a pipeline section across Shoreline Boulevard by the Shoreline Park gatehouse to improve system integrity will be replaced.

The weekday construction with some limited nighttime operations may cause traffic delays. The work is expected to be completed by April 2025.

Go Electric and Receive Support through Rebates and Cool Block Program

As part of the City’s ongoing efforts to achieve building decarbonization goals by 2045 and align with regional actions by the Bay Area Air Quality District to prohibit the use of natural gas furnace and water heater appliances by 2027, the City has adopted new regulations to support the transition from gas to electric-powered buildings.

Effective Jan. 1, all building permits in the City of Mountain View for residential and non-residential new construction, and major renovations to existing buildings, will either need to have all-electric appliances or electrical prewiring when a gas appliance is proposed.

There are two initiatives currently underway to support permits for building electrification:

* Silicon Valley Clean Energy provides rebates for prewiring existing single-family homes and multi-family homes of four dwelling units or fewer. For more information, visit SVCE Rebates [ https://links-2.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fsvcleanenergy.org%2Fhome-rebates%2F/1/010101946bfd2bf2-da967de4-1f9e-4609-bda2-f296ad556249-000000/lOAPZ7DGGwQ11YBWpMsdYvrSzNqbjcWCwQ3RBYFNHB4=388 ].
* The City of Mountain View is launching a Cool Block Mountain View cohort in 2025, which will assemble neighborhood groups to collaborate on multiple sustainability goals such as home electrification. To participate, visit Cool Block Mountain View [ https://links-2.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2Fforms%2Fd%2Fe%2F1FAIpQLSeAFyxgQIi1v_XN4Pripd8c9z4j1iicuaRa6DuxXyQlaJSDeQ%2Fviewform/1/010101946bfd2bf2-da967de4-1f9e-4609-bda2-f296ad556249-000000/QO_R7FJftSTJPg2EqJa-GIErFlDKsav0ob55PGGA57Y=388 ].

Natural gas use from buildings represents about 25% of the City’s greenhouse gas emissions, making building electrification a key strategy for decarbonization.
