Fremont Cares: Accepting Support From the Community You Helped Build

Ms. Eva lived a life shaped by a deep commitment to serving others amid a series of personal challenges.

After losing her mom at a young age, Ms. Eva was raised by her aunt. While her aunt provided a stable and loving environment, life continued to present challenges but that didn’t stop Ms. Eva from helping others.

She pursued and excelled in a social services career, which spanned over 40 years across Contra Costa and Alameda Counties. It gave her a profound appreciation for the role of social safety net programs, but she did not think that one day she would benefit from them.

However, when the pandemic struck in 2020, Ms. Eva became financially vulnerable.

As financial pressure grew, Ms. Eva faced displacement and repossessions, increasing her sense of instability. The emotional blow of losing all of her possessions, including many meaningful items, was devastating.

Seeking refuge from sleeping on the streets, she found herself spending a significant portion of her income on motels – a temporary solution that did not offer her long-term security.

The Winter Relief Program [ https://www.fremont.gov/residents/homeless-response/homeless-services/winter-relief-program ] emerged as a turning point in Ms. Eva's story. During the program's initial orientation, she felt like she belonged. The staff at Mission Peak Lodge, particularly the manager Amy, created an environment of kindness and respect, allowing her to heal and rebuild. The program offered not just shelter for her and her beloved dog, CeeCee, but also a strong sense of community.

The daily meals provided by the program became a source of both physical and emotional nourishment, as she connected deeply with the dedicated program staff who visited her every night. During her time in the program, she also celebrated her 73rd birthday, a milestone she credited the program with helping her reach

With the safety and support of Winter Relief, Ms. Eva focused on finding permanent housing. She took matters into her own hands, reaching out to property managers and completing applications.

While drinking coffee and petting CeeCee at Mission Peak Lodge, she felt elated when one of the apartment managers called her back. She found herself screaming for joy and crying tears of relief when she found out she had secured a home. Even the challenge of securing the $200 cashier’s check deposit – a sum she managed to save through her participation in the program – felt possible, considering the hope that lay ahead.

The day Ms. Eva moved into her new apartment was more than just a change of address; it was a symbolic move towards safety and a new beginning. Her new home, a senior building where she pays a set portion of her income in rent, offered her a sense of security that she had not experienced in a long time.

Now, with a stable foundation beneath her, Ms. Eva is setting sights on the future.

She is eager to improve her financial literacy through resources like SparkPoint Fremont [ https://www.fremont.gov/government/departments/human-services/human-services-in-the-community/sparkpoint ] and explore ways to increase her income. She also looks forward to participating in senior programming, nurturing her love of gardening, and sharing her faith through teaching Sunday School online from her new apartment. Driven by a desire to give back, Ms. Eva intends to volunteer at future Winter Relief Program orientations.

Reflecting on her journey, Ms. Eva emphasized the importance of positivity, perseverance, and a willingness to seek help from those who offer it.

For Ms. Eva, the Winter Relief Program was not just a way to stop sleeping in her car, but a transformative experience. She said the Winter Relief Program not only provided her with a safe place to sleep indoors but also empowered her to advocate for herself.

Ms. Eva’s life is a testament not only to the human capacity for resilience and determination, but also to the transformative impact of community support.
