Lakewood Branch Grand Opening





Join us for the opening of Sunnyvale's Lakewood Branch Library!

*Saturday, Aug. 29 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m*

*Room:* Throughout Lakewood Branch Library
*Audience:* All ages
*Registration:* Not required

 

Join us for the grand opening of our long-awaited Lakewood Branch Library and Learning Center at 760 Lakechime Drive!

 

Located in North Sunnyvale, this new all-electric building will feature comfortable study rooms, dedicated spaces for children and teens, and library programs for all ages. The Maker Lab is equipped with a 3D printer, a laser cutter, sewing machines, a large-format printer, vinyl cutters, jewelry-making supplies and arts-and-crafts supplies for curious creators.

 

We will celebrate the grand opening with a storytime by Mychal Threets, live music from the Sound Project, a maker lab showcase, crafts, giveaways and fun for the whole family.

 

The Center is the result of a community partnership built with the City, the Sunnyvale School District and the Fremont Union High School District.

 

Lakewood Library Teen Space

The Lakewood Library will feature a dedicated Teen Space, including an enclosed study room! Visit during the Grand Opening to make a self-care pouch and spin for prizes. You'll also have the opportunity to share ideas for teen programming and services

Summer Reading Program 2026





Summer Reading Unearth a Story
Get a free book when you sign up!

Teens (grades 6 to 12) will receive a brand-new, free paperback book when they sign up for the Summer Reading Program from *June 1 to August 31.*

 

Once signed up, go to the Children’s Information Desk for your free book. Readers who finish the challenge by reading *three books or 180 minutes* (1 hour counts as 1 book) are entered into a drawing for a grand prize! The more books or minutes you read, the more chances to win!

 

Additionally, complete activity badges to earn extra chances to win a grand prize!

Level Up Your Communication: Skills for School, Work and Life

*Wednesday, Aug. 5 from 1 to 3 p.m.*

*Room:* Library Program Room, Sunnyvale Main Library
*Audience:* Grades 9 to 12
*Registration:* Required. Walk-ins may be available if space allows.

 

Want to make a strong first impression at school, jobs, internships, and beyond? This interactive workshop will teach you how to communicate professionally through emails, phone calls, and everyday conversations.

 

"This program requires use of a laptop, phone, or similar device. If you cannot bring your own, request one during registration to be provided to you during the event."

 

This program is hosted by NOVAworks, a regional Workforce Development Board which helps career seekers and young adults with professional career guidance, skill development and job search assistance.

Bike Safety Information and Repair Workshop

*Saturday, Aug. 8 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.*

*Location:* Serra Park, 730 The Dalles Ave.

*Audience:* All ages
*Registration:* Not required. First come, first serve.

 

Is your bike in need of a repair or tune-up? Not sure how to tell if your bike is safe to ride? Need to patch your bike's inner tube? Bring your bike to *Serra Park*!

 

Volunteers from Bike Sunnyvale (the local chapter of the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition) will be onsite to teach the ABC Quick Check, share safety tips, give out bicycle goodies and answer other bike-related questions.

4Kidz Logo

4Kidz Card Making Program

*Thursday, Aug. 13 from 1 to 2 p.m.*

Please join us in making cards and bracelets for kids and seniors.  Many of the cards will go to hospitals and will help put a smile on the receiver's face. Most of the cards made will be delivered to pediatric children.

 

This program is brought to you by the Sunnyvale chapter of 4Kidz, a nonprofit organization. 4Kidz is a youth-led 501(c)(3) and PVSA-certified non-profit organization that aims to spread hope and positivity to hospitalized children around the world.

Immerse yourself in the vibrant world of Japanese taiko drumming, bamboo flute music and captivating folk tales! Feel the thunderous rhythms of the taiko drums reverberate through your body as you explore the deep connections between language, culture and history. Along the way, you’ll also experience the melodies of the Japanese bamboo flute and hear traditional folk tales that have been passed down through generations. Engage in an unforgettable educational experience, with the chance to play the drums yourself!

Identity Lab: Essay-writing in the College Process

*Saturday, Aug. 15 from 1 to 3 p.m.*

*Room:* Library Program Room, Sunnyvale Main Library
*Audience:* College Applicants 
*Registration:* Required

 

During *Identity Lab*, students will reflect on their identity, perspective and lived experiences through collaborative activities and guided prompts to prepare for *essay-writing in the college process*. The Common App personal statement is the primary focus, and attendees will also gain strategies directly applicable to UC personal interest questions. There will also be a Question & Answer session for questions on Common App and UC applications. After the workshop, each student will receive a brief report with feedback and ideas for next steps.

This program is intended for high school seniors or recent graduates currently applying to college.

Stargazing Party at Foothill Observatory

*Monday, Aug. 17 from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m.*

*Location:* Foothill College
*Audience:* All ages
*Registration:* Not required. Register for an email reminder.

 

Join the Sunnyvale Public Library and the Peninsula Astronomical Society for an evening under the stars! This family-friendly event will take place at the Foothill Observatory at Foothill College, where members of the Peninsula Astronomical Society will guide visitors through a tour of the night sky.

Visitors will be able to view the wonders of the universe through the observatory’s computer-controlled 16-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. Whether you’re a lifelong stargazer or have never looked through a telescope before, all are welcome.

The observatory is adjacent to Parking Lot 4 and the Krause Innovation Center at Foothill College, 12345 El Monte Road, Los Altos Hills, CA 94022.

Registration is not required but recommended to receive email reminders.

Summer Reading Wrap-Up Celebration

Come help us close out this year’s Summer Reading Challenge! We’ll be ‘Unearthing a Story’ with crafts for all ages in the Library Program Room. We’ll also have a scavenger hunt in the Library, with one for children and one for adults.
