To ensure readiness during changing weather conditions, additional field crews were on call 24 hours a day. Teams proactively monitored key systems, maintained stormwater infrastructure citywide, and responded quickly as conditions evolved. Their efforts included clearing debris from storm drain facilities, closely monitoring lagoon and pump operations, coordinating responses to infrastructure issues, and taking swift action to maintain safe travel conditions at railroad crossings when needed. We are incredibly grateful for the long hours, teamwork, and commitment shown by our Public Works field staff and supervisors. Their work often happens behind the scenes, but it plays a vital role in protecting our neighborhoods and keeping San Mateo moving — especially during challenging weather. Please join the City Manager's Office in thanking our Public Works teams for their outstanding service and dedication to our community. Public Works Neighbors Helping Neighbors: Keep Storm Drains Clear Recent winter storms have left leaves and debris piling up along streets and around storm drains. While Public Works crews are actively clearing drains across the city, residents can play a big role in keeping neighborhoods safe. How You Can Help Before the next storm, take a few minutes to clear debris around storm drains near your home. Use a rake or gloves to remove leaves, trash, and debris from the grate Clear about 10 feet on either side of the drain Do not lift or remove the grate or cover Dispose of leaves in your compost bin and trash in the garbage bin Why It Matters Keeping storm drains clear helps: Reduce localized flooding Protect water quality Prevent trash from entering creeks, Marina Lagoon, and the Bay Keep streets and neighborhoods safer during heavy rain Stay Safe While You Help Work from the sidewalk — stay out of the street Wear bright or reflective clothing Use gloves and tools to protect your hands Never pick up sharp objects with bare hands Stay hydrated and wear appropriate footwear Want to Do More? If you’d like to make an ongoing impact, consider joining the City’s Adopt-a-Drain Program and help care for a storm drain year-round. Sign up for Adopt a Drain. We want to hear your ideas about updating regulations for: Single-family neighborhoods Commercial uses Public notification requirements Open space and parking requirements And more! The goal is to align the Zoning Code with the recently adopted General Plan 2040 and 2023–2031 Housing Element. General Plan 2040 was based on the vision of the community, and established regulations about important topics, such as what kind of development is allowed where, heights, and densities. Now, the City is asking for community ideas about how to make the Zoning Code more user friendly and how standards that guide development for both single-family homes and higher density projects should be updated, among other topics.
