It is very hard to perform the Kantei ( Appraisal ) on the Nipponto ( Japanese swords ). It will take 45 years or more to learn the proper way to perform the Kantei on the genuine antique Japanese swords.

We have to learn how to analyze the Japanese swords with over 50 points of Kantei.

The Kantei must be done on the 2 major parts:

1. Kami / The top portion of Nipponto or the blade section, such as Ha-chou ( Blade length ), Hamon ( Tempering patterns ), Jimon ( Grain/texture ), Hataraki ( Special effects appeared in the Ha-zakai area or border line after the Yaki-ire process ), Kiri-saki ( Cutting tip ) shape, etc. and much much more !

2. Shimo / The bottom portion of Nipponto or the Tang area with good rust ( Patina ), such as Yasuri-me ( File markings ), Iro ( Color ), condition of patina, Mei ( Inscription ) reading, Nakago-saki ( Tang end ) shape, etc. and much much more !

The final judgment is done through the Mei ( Inscription or signature of maker ) reading & Mei-furi ( Stroke order of Mei ) condition, then we can determine the Shoushin ( Authentic ) or Gimei ( False inscription ) on the Japanese sword.

Important note: Ordinary Japanese people with High School education or University education level cannot read the Mei appeared in the Nakago accordingly. People who are not fluent in the Japanese language cannot read the Mei at all.

The important Kantei ( Appraisal ) points:
1. Judging from the Taihai ( Body balance ), I can deduce the Jidai ( Era or Year ).

2. Judging from the Hamon ( Tempering pattern ), I can deduce the Gokaden ( 5 Traditional swordsmith school ).

3. Judging from the Hamon, I can deduce the particular Katana-kaji ( Swordsmith ) also.

4. Judging from the Jimon ( Grain/texture ), I can deduce the Gokaden ( 5 Traditional swordsmith school ).

5. Judging from the Jimon, I can deduce the particular Katana-kaji ( Swordsmith ) also.

6. Judging from the Hataraki ( Special effects ), I can deduce the Gokaden ( 5 Traditional swordsmith school ).

7. Judging from the Hataraki, I can deduce the particular Katana-kaji ( Swordsmith ) also.

8. Judging from the Hataraki, I can deduce the Jidai ( Era or Year ) also.

9. Judging from the Utsuri ( The 2nd Hamon ), I can deduce the Gokaden ( 5 Traditional swordsmith school ).

10. Judging from the Utsuri, I can deduce the particular Katana-kaji ( Swordsmith ) also.

11. Judging from the Utsuri, I can deduce the Jidai ( Era or Year ) also.

and much much more !

Important note: Without the Kenma ( Polishing ) completion, I cannot provide the above mentioned information for your Nipponto ( Japanese swords ) at all.

After the completion of above mentioned 3 basic sword restoration work, we can see the Hamon ( Tempering pattern ), Jimon ( Grain/texture ), Hataraki ( Special effects appeared after the Yaki-ire or quenching ) & Utsuri ( The 2nd Hamon ) so much easier.

Therefore, we can display the Nipponto at anywhere ( Museum, Sword shows, local antique shows, private collector's meeting, sword study meeting, etc. ) in the world.

Thus, after the 3 basic restoration completed, I can see the above mentioned characteristics much easier for the Kantei ( Appraisal ) performance.
