Your Weekly South City Update | 🍔Nation’s! 🥧 Council Recap, Scooters, Oyster Point 2C Ribbon-Cutting, and more | November 15, 2024

Email from City of South San Francisco   Mayor's Update     Hello neighbor! Thanksgiving must be around the corner, because I smell pie🥧! And those pies are coming from the brand-new 🍔Nation’s opening this coming Monday, November 18. Join us for the ribbon-cutting at 12:00 p.m. at 925 El Camino Real.   Council Recap We recognized November 14, 2024 as Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day. We’re celebrating November 30, 2024 as Shop Small Business Saturday. We’re also recognizing November as Native American Heritage Month. We honored Assistant City Clerk Jazmine Miranda for achieving her Certified Municipal Clerk designation (CMC) from the International Institute of Municipal Clerks. We also had a presentation from the Planning Commission regarding the role of the Commission and their recent work. To improve accessibility, we now livestream our city council meetings on our YouTube channel. Catch the next meeting live or watch the replay. Watch the Replay   Help Recognize Local Veterans As part of the new Orange Memorial Park Aquatic Center project, we’re making updates to the Veterans Memorial including a restored Eternal Flame sculpture, updated recognition plaques, and a new illuminated flagpole. The City is seeking to recognize all Veterans who lived in South San Francisco and died in the line of duty or from service-connected exposure. Residents are encouraged to submit the names of any such Veterans through an online survey or by visiting the Roberta Cerri Teglia Center at 601 Grand Ave or the Library | Parks & Recreation Center at 901 Civic Campus Way, where a paper form can be completed. All submissions will be vetted by Veterans Affairs, and eligible names may be included on new plaques at the redesigned memorial. Visit our Website   Introducing a new way to cruise the Oyster Point Business District Oyster Point Mobility is excited to announce the launch of 150 seated electric scooters throughout the Oyster Point business district! This innovative program is brought to you by Oyster Point Mobility, a business community coalition working to reduce traffic in South San Francisco from employees commuting to Oyster Point. These scooters are available to the public for a nominal fee. This initiative aims to provide a convenient "last mile" transportation option to nearby public transit service. Scooters are required to park in designated locations and are not allowed to ride west of Highway 101. If residents see a scooter parked inappropriately, they are encouraged to contact Veo at hello@veoride.com or 855-836-2256. Take the Survey   Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day started in South San Francisco What started in 2017 as a petition by Mrs. Deborah Carlino’s fifth-grade class at Martin Elementary School has grown into a statewide observance. Inspired by Ruby Bridges’ role in desegregating a New Orleans school in 1960, the students collected over 1,000 signatures and successfully petitioned local and state officials to create a day in her honor. In 2017, the South San Francisco Unified School District (SSFUSD) officially recognized November 14 as Ruby Bridges Day. The following year, the City of South San Francisco and the San Mateo County Office of Education joined in, and soon schools across the county—and beyond—adopted Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day. In 2021, California State Senator Josh Becker helped make it official, with the state declaring November 17, 2021, as the first statewide Ruby Bridges Day.
