Native American Heritage Month
Native American Heritage Month
Celebrate Native American Heritage Month with us by coming to a virtual author talk, where guest speakers will share personal experiences and dive deeper into Native American history.
* Join us for a virtual talk with Navajo Ranger Stanley Milford, Jr. [ https://libraryc.org/mountainviewlibrary/59219 ] on Thursday, Nov. 7 as he talks about his book "The Paranormal Ranger [ https://catalog.mountainview.gov/Record/.b34673362 ]". As a Native American with parents of both Navajo and Cherokee descent, Milford grew up in a world where the supernatural was both expected and taboo. When he joined the fabled Navajo Rangers, the paranormal became part of his job. He recounts the stories of these cases from the clinical and deductive perspective of a law enforcement officer in his book.
* Come to a discussion with historian Kathleen DuVal [ https://mountainview.libcal.com/event/12668741 ] on Saturday, Nov. 16 as she talks about her history book "Native Nations: A Millennium in North America [ https://catalog.mountainview.gov/GroupedWork/ee3e529e-6ce0-0647-203e-103afb559949-eng ]". In her book, DuVal shows how the definitions of power and means of exerting it have shifted over time, but the sovereignty and influence of Native peoples remained a constant—and will continue far into the future.
* On Wednesday, Nov. 20, we'll hear Mona Susan Power [ https://libraryc.org/mountainviewlibrary/60584 ] talk about her newest novel "A Council of Dolls [ https://catalog.mountainview.gov/GroupedWork/e7d600ca-b98d-eb20-309d-23416060a211-eng ]. "Her work explores Native rights and Native American culture using dolls, an important symbol that anchors comfort and companionship in Native life. From the mid-century metropolis of Chicago to the windswept ancestral lands of the Dakota people, to the bleak and brutal Indian boarding schools, "A Council of Dolls" is the story of three women told in part through the stories of the dolls they carried.

Noirvember with Kanopy
Noirvember with Kanopy
November is Noirvember! Every November, Kanopy [ http://mountainview.kanopy.com/ ] darkens the mood and celebrates film noir by presenting a curated collection that our resident film buffs can enjoy for free with a Mountain View Public Library card.
The cinematic term “noir” originated in post-World War II France. The word was used to describe American thriller and detective films from the period that featured low-key lighting and a black-and-white aesthetic with roots in German expressionist filmmaking. This fascinating genre has produced some of the greatest cinema classics including "The Maltese Falcon", "Double Indemnity", "Laura" and many more.
Check out Kanopy this Noirvember to participate in the month-long film noir festival from the comfort of your own home.
